Location:

Rosas is located in a unique natural setting on the North East coast of the Iberian Peninsula, North of Costa Brava.

One of the main advantages of Rosas is no doubt its privileged geographical location.

We are less than 30 Km away from French border, 45 min from Gerona and 1h30 from Barcelona, in the Alt Empordá region, in Catalonia.

Being so close to France, access by road is very easy (exist number 3 in motorway A7, heading for Barcelona)

Likewise two airports are very close to Rosas, Perpignan airport and Gerona international airport (45 min from Rosas).

Worthwhile mentioning the high speed train line soon to link Barcelona and Perpignan, stopping at Figueres (only 15 min. away from Rosas).

Nature and landscape

Rosas offers a Mediterranean coastal line full of contrast; to be found on its coasts steep abrupt cliffs and secluded creek of crystal clear waters and fine sand beaches.

This region is marked by the contrast between the Mediterranean Sea, the plain and the Pyrenees.

The Aiguamolls de Empordá (Wetlands) hosts a large number of indigenous fauna and flora.

History and culture

The first settlers arrived in Rosas some 3 000 years ago. The region holds one of the most representative concentrations of megalithic monuments in Catalonia.

The origins of Rosas population dates back to VIII century B.C. when Rhode settlers founded the Greek town of Rhodes.

Given its coastal nature, Alt Empordá is a region marked by the imprint of all the Mediterranean cultures who disembark at these coasts.

The archaeological site of Ampurias is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula, as far as Greek and Roman colonisation is concerned and it is in deed one of the most valuable treasures in the region.

Coupled with this monument site, to be found the medieval city of Sant Marti d'Empuries. Its houses combine the essence of Gothic style with architectural elements of several consecutively successive.

The region holds highly valuable heritage in Roman style monuments. The historical site of Sant Pere de Rodes hosts in the same site a Benedictine monastery and a church both from the X century.

The presence of Gothic art in the region has a highly dignified representative in the church of Santa María de Castelló d'Empuries, known as the Empordá cathedral due to the influence it had in the Middle Age.

Worthwhile mentioning that Salvador Dali was taken by the charm of this land and it is in this region that two of three edges of the Dalinian triangle are to be found: Figueres host city of Dali Museum, the most visited museum in Spain and the town of Cadaqués.

Activities

Rosas is a very active city all year round. Throughout the year it hosts very many festivals and fairs. A very diversified cultural, traditional, sporty offer is to be found, including conferences, exhibitions, concerts, competitions and sport tournaments, as well as the traditional festivity of Saint John's night and Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen during which the typical food is Suquet de Peix. Particularly worthwhile mentioning is Rosas carnival which it has become one of the most important carnivals in Catalonia. In July and August, blues and rock festivals take place as well as classical and traditional music festivals (habaneras).

Gastronomy

Rosas unique location and the proximity of Cape Creus make it available extremely fresh sea products to be used in the preparation of traditional regional dishes. The representative dish of the region gastronomy by excellence is no doubt Suquet de Peix.

Vast vineyards yield excellent wines and cavas.

Leisure

Driving a kart, enjoying a fun day at a water park, taking a boat and visiting Cape Creus or the tourist visit train are some of the activities Rosas offers the visitor to occupy leisure time. If you are a sea fan, in Rosas you can practice jet-ski, sail in a catamaran, sailing boat, surf, or kite-surf, participate in an introductory course to diving or water ski. Likewise you can cycle, ride a mountain bike, drive a quad, a motorcycle or a 4 wheel drive, or else take a walk, ride a horse, play tennis, paragliding or parachuting.
